School Condition Allocations (SCA) funding is provided by the Department for Education (DfE) to help maintain and improve the condition of the school estate across England. Unlike bid-based funding schemes like CIF, SCA is formula-allocated, giving eligible organisations more control and flexibility over how funds are used.
A strong approach to managing SCA relies on high-quality data, strategic planning, and a clear understanding of estate needs across a portfolio of schools.
Who is SCA funding for?
SCA is school funding allocated to responsible bodies overseeing multiple education establishments, including:
- Local authorities and local-authority-maintained schools, including maintained nursery schools
- Voluntary-aided bodies and voluntary-aided schools
- Academy trusts, including large multi-academy trusts (MATs)
- Sixth-form colleges
- Non-maintained special schools (NMSS)
- Special post-16 institutions (SPIs) with eligible students
The funding is intended to support essential works that ensure school buildings are safe, warm, and in good working order.
Eligibility Criteria for SCA
To qualify for the SCA funding for schools in the 2025–2026 financial year, MATs and VA bodies must meet both of the following criteria:
- They must have had 5 or more open schools as of 1 September 2024, and
- Those schools (or their predecessor schools) must have had at least 3,000 pupils recorded in either the spring 2024 census or the 2023–2024 individualised learner record (ILR)
- For special and alternative provision schools (including PRUs), the pupil count is multiplied by 4.5 to reflect their lower enrolment and more complex site requirements. For example, a trust with 1,000 special school pupils would be treated as having 4,500 for eligibility purposes.
Pupil numbers are based on:
- Sole, dual-main, or dual-subsidiary enrolment
- Pupils registered at multiple institutions are divided proportionally (e.g. 0.5 at each if dual-registered)
- FTE figures are used for nursery schools and sixth forms
- Eligible academy trusts and VA bodies are notified by the DfE each autumn. Eligibility must be confirmed — it should not be assumed year to year.
Who Receives CIF Instead?
Smaller academy trusts, smaller VA bodies, and sixth-form colleges are not eligible for direct SCA and are instead invited to apply for CIF.
If a school was invited to apply for CIF for the 2025–2026 cycle, their responsible body will not receive SCA on their behalf. Schools expecting condition investment are advised to submit a CIF bid if invited.
Additionally, schools with an academy order as of September 2024 that were expected to convert into a CIF-eligible trust by April 2025 were also invited to apply for CIF.
Key Dates for SCA Funding
- Eligibility Confirmation:The DfE typically notifies eligible responsible bodies of their SCA status in the autumn preceding the funding year. For the 2025–2026 cycle, eligibility was confirmed in autumn 2024.
- Funding Allocation:Final SCA funding amounts for the 2025–2026 financial year were published on 20 May 2025.
- Funding Period:The SCA funding covers the financial year from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026.
